The founder, Kalev Klais, has sold the Estonian eyewear and lenses retailer Tallinna Optika OU to the Finnish chain Silmaasema Fennica Oy in a transaction that is slated to take effect on Jan. 2, reports LETA/BNS.

Tallinna Optika has eight stores across Estonia, including three in Tallinn and one in Tartu, Parnu, Viljandi and Tapa each. The company employs a workforce of 34, including ten eye doctors.

"Silmaasema is the only company in Finland that brings together into one service chain all skills related to eye health, from opticians to top surgeons, and for Tallinna Optika the consolidation represents an excellent opportunity to develop its business," Klais said in a press release.

The managing director of Silmaasema Fennica, Pasi Kohmo, said taking the business concept of Silmaasema to new markets played an important part in their strategy and that the acquisition of Tallinna Optika was the first step in making the operations of the company international. Silmaasema is the third biggest optician chain in Finland and market leader in several areas related to eye health.

Silmaasema has acquired six companies and opened 14 new outlets during 2016. Overall, the additions have brought ten optician's stores and one eye clinic under the Silmaasema brand.

Silmaasema now has more than 150 outlets, including 13 eye clinics.

On Jan. 2, the duties of CEO of Tallinna Optika will be assumed by Vesa Punnonen, head of international operations of Silmaasema. The management team of Tallinna Optika will continue performing their present duties.

Silmaasema performs more than 135,000 optician's checks, 140,000 eye specialist receptions and 15,000 surgeries to remove a cataract or correct eyesight annually. Its sales in 2015 totaled more than 100 million euros.
