Preparations for construction of the multifunctional shopping and recreation center Akropole got under way at 257 Maskavas Street in Riga today, as Akropole representative Kristine Bambe told LETA.

Piles for the building will be driven by the construction company Skonto Buve. Further information about the project and construction companies involved will be released in the near future, said Bambe.

"The multifunctional shopping center will have not just stores, but also an ice rink, film center, bowling alley, various restaurants, and a large play area for children," said Akropole communications consultant Ralfs Vilands.

The first technical project for Akropole was approved back in 2015, but a new, improved version of the project was supported by the Riga Construction Board on September 13 this year.

Construction of Akropole will proceed in accordance with BREEAM building sustainability principles. Akropole will become the first multifunctional shopping center in Latvia to be built according to these quality criteria.

The total area of Akropole shopping center will be approximately 98,000 square meters, including quality office space 9,000 square meters in area.

Total investment in the project is estimated at around EUR 100 mln at the moment.

The shopping mall will be part of Akropolis Group - Lithuanian company that runs a number of shopping centers in Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Bulgaria. The company is the developer of the Akropolis shopping and recreation center in Kaunas, which in 2008 was acquired by a German investment fund.
