Number of residents in Riga Planning Region to grow to 1.1 mln by 2030

The number of residents in the Riga Planning Region by 2030 will grow to 1.1 mln, and the gross domestic product (GDP) might grow by 30%, according to the region's development vision, writes LETA.

Riga Planning Region's representative Ansis Krumins said that in 2030 the administrative role of the Riga Planning Region in the Baltic economy is expected to grow. Unemployment level in the coming years might shrink by 5%, while GDP per capita could amount to EUR 15,000, which would be by 3% higher than at present.


The number of active companies and innovative companies might grow by 30%. Also, the role of International Airport Riga is expected to grow, and the number of passengers is expected to reach EUR 7.5 mln and the number of direct flight should rise by 25%.


The region's development should take place in an environmentally friendly way as the share of renewable energy resources might amount to 50%, and the number of cyclists should grow by one fifth. The region will also become safer as experts predict that the crime rate might drop by one fifth, as well as the number of road accidents.


The development vision has been based on the Riga Planning Region's regional development documents - Sustainable Development Strategy for 2014-2030, and Development Program for 2014-2020.
