US Vice President Joe Biden will visit Latvia by the end of summer
Raimonds Vejonis and Joe Biden discussed the upcoming NATO summit this week, where decisions would be made on increasing the allied forces in the Member States of the Eastern flank.
“Current US military presence in the region has contributed to the increasing investments by the allies. Thanks to it, there is intention to decide in Warsaw on deployment of a multinational NATO battalion in the Baltic States and Poland,” indicated the President of Latvia.
Joe Biden confirmed Washington's unwavering commitment to extend security assurances pursuant to Article 5 of the NATO Founding Treaty to Latvia. US Vice President stressed that the significant increase in US military forces in Eastern Europe would strengthen defence of the Baltic States and improve NATO's deterrence capability significantly.
Biden, 74, is an experienced US politician, representing the Democratic Party. He was elected Vice President in 2009. Latvian top officials have met with Biden during their foreign visits. In 2014 Biden visited Lithuania.In 2011 Latvian then president Valdis Zatlers during his visit to
Washington presented Biden with Latvia's Order of the Tree Stars for his
significant support for Latvia's admission to NATO, informs LETA.
