The University of Tartu is also the only Baltic university on the list.

The top three is made up of the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.

Universities of 22 countries were among the top 200. Institutions were measured on their teaching environment, research environment, citations (research influence), industry income and international outlook.

When taking into account the size of a country's population, Scandinavian universities performed strong as Sweden had 11 universities on the list, and Finland and Denmark six each.

The most important university ranking of THE is the World University Ranking which ranks the world's top 400 universities. In 2015, the University of Tartu placed 351st to 400th on that list.
