Bumper harvest is expected in Lithuania in 2015

BC, Vilnius, 28.09.2015.Print version
In 2015, a 5.9 million ton harvest of cereal crops is projected in Lithuania, among which – 5.5 million tons of cereals, predicts the Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics, cites LETA/ELTA.

Compared with 2014, this year's harvest should be 10.5% bigger. An increase should be determined by larger crop areas and changes in structure. Although the cereal areas did not change significantly, the areas of winter cereals were 43% larger this year, which will result in a better total harvest.

The richest harvest is projected in wheat (over 21% more) – 3.9 million tons. Meanwhile, smaller summer rape areas will result in a poorer harvest – 506,000 tons. The sugar beet harvest is also expected to fall by 30% and reach 713,000 tons due to smaller areas.

In September, the potato harvest projections were corrected: their harvest will be 26.7% smaller this year, standing at 343,500 tons or 15 tons per hectare.

The Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics was founded in 1990 by restructuring the Lithuanian Scientific Research Institute of Agricultural Economics, which was founded in 1959. The Institute has the total number of 64 employees and 38 involved in scientific research, including 10 doctors of science.
