Tallinn Zoo celebrated 76th anniversary

BC, Tallinn, 27.08.2015.Print version
The Tallinn Zoo celebrated their 76th anniversary on August 25th, and it is already clear that this year will be a record year in terms of visitors, writes LETA/National Broadcasting.

Already the zoo has exceeded the record of 2013, when a total of 365,000 visits were made to the zoo by the public.

Despite these good news, however, Director of the zoo Mati Kaal is concerned over the future of polar bears in the zoo. The old and outdated cages where polar bears live belong in the past.

Kaal explained that technology is developing at a very fast pace nowadays, and the zoos that are unable to keep up tend to lose the animals they are unable to maintain well. “The Riga Zoo lost their elephants for that reason, and if we fail to construct the new habitat for our polar bears, there is a risk that our polar bears with great bloodlines might be lost to us,” he said.

Tallinn Zoo need 3 million euros for building a facility for polar bears, and there is currently no such money in the budget. Money needed to start construction works was collected by the zoo from donations.
