BC, Riga, 10.01.2015.Print version
The Photo Department of the information agency LETA marked the 10th anniversary since renewing its work, because it is exactly 10 years ago, in January 2005, the first photo report was made to capture one of the most devastating storms in the territory of Latvia to date. More than 500,000 photographs have since been published, and all of them have been accumulated in a voluminous photo archive, the head of LETA's marketing department Inese Sala informs.

Each day, some 150-200 new photographs of key public, political, economic, cultural and sports events are added to the LETA photographers’ gallery, which are used by the largest printed media and Internet portals. The photographs are also used by many organizations and companies for their personal purposes.

Over the years, LETA Photo has developed close cooperation with such photography agencies as AFP (France), ITAR-TASS and RIA Novosti (Russia), ELTA (Lithuania), and the European Pressphoto Agency EPA.

At the moment, information agency LETA offers the most extensive database of photographic material in Latvia, with 3,500 new photographs added each day from Latvia, neighbor countries, and all over the world.

The first picture taken by a LETA photographer dates back to August 1931, and the Photo Department was active until the end of the 1990s. The historical photo archive is currently part of the State Archive of Audiovisual Documents of Latvia.

Last year, when information agency LETA turned 95, LETA and the State Archive of Audiovisual Documents reached agreement on regular updates to the “LETA Fund” with the latest photo and video materials. So far, LETA has turned over 1,000 photographs to the archive, LETA informs.
