Vilnius and Kaunas to seek to become World Book Capital in 2012

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 29.12.2009.Print version
In 2012, Vilnius and Kaunas will seek to receive and share the title of the World Book Capital. This title is granted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to a city in recognition of the quality of its programs to promote books and reading.

Vilnius Deputy Mayor Gintaras Babravicius announced about that during a press conference on the project "Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009" (VEKS).

According to Babravicius, the success of the VEKS project encouraged seeking for this honourable title, and the idea is that two largest Lithuanian cities, Vilnius and Kaunas, would share the title of the World Book Capital in 2012.

"It is not known yet, whether it will be possible to nominate two cities, if not, most probably, Vilnius will receive this title, however, there still will be a number of joint projects with Kaunas," said Babravicius.

According to the deputy mayor, the applications will be submitted to UNESCO in January, and whether the Lithuanian cities receive the title of the World Book Capital or not will become clear in the middle of February.

Babravicius said that there were cases when two cities shared this title.

This year, the World Book Capital is Beirut.
