BC, Riga, 11.12.2014.Print version
Media, as well as professional and non-governmental organizations whose line is journalism and who advocate freedom of speech, can apply their choices for the 2015 UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize by February 1, 2015.

UNESCO has confirmed that the presentation ceremony will take place in Riga on the World Press Freedom Day, May 3. Following the Foreign Ministry's initiative, UNESCO has decided to entrust Latvia with organizing various conferences dedicated to the World Press Freedom Day, as well as the ceremony.

Latvian and UNESCO media professionals have proposed to discuss various topics, such as media independence, development of investigative journalism, women and media, digital media, and innovations in media environment.

The UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize was established in honor of Guillermo Cano Isaza, editor at Colombian newspaper "El Espectador", who was assassinated in 1986. The purpose is to reward each year a person, organization or institution that has made a notable contribution to the defense and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially if risks have been involved.
