The Board of the Bank of Lithuania approved the lists of banks and credit unions that will exchange cash litas to euro free of charge. Together with branches of the Lithuania Post and the Bank of Lithuania's cash offices, the total number of such locations for free exchange will amount to 690, informed BC the Bank of Lithuania.

Their list is available at the Bank of Lithuania website, where an interactive map of exchange locations can also be found.

"In making lists of litas to euro exchange locations, we aimed to cover the largest possible territory in the country, thus creating the most convenient conditions for the population," says Alis Jaramaitis, Director of the Bank of Lithuania Cash Service.

In the first half year of 2015, banknotes and coins will be exchanged to euro free of charge at 343 commercial bank branches. In addition, from the beginning of 1 March, litas banknotes and coins will be exchanged to euro free of charge at 14 exchange locations of 11 credit unions and 330 branches of Lithuania Post. The list of post office branches where litas will be exchanged to euro free of charge was approved in May of this year.

Litas to euro, but only banknotes, will be exchanged free of charge in the second half-year of 2015. This will be done by 89 branches of commercial banks. The Bank of Lithuania will, at its cash offices in Vilnius and Kaunas, exchange litas banknotes into euro free of charge for an unlimited time.

Litas will not be exchanged into euro either at home or on the streets. Therefore, the public is advised to be alert and not be deceived, if persons visiting at their home would offer to record their litas banknotes, exchange their savings into euro, etc. Officially and legally, the currency will only be exchanged at the Bank of Lithuania, commercial bank branches, Lithuanian Post branches and some credit unions.

Those who do not want to waste time on cash litas exchange are recommended, until the euro adoption date, to keep their money in bank accounts. In them, on the euro adoption date, all money will be automatically converted to euro according to the established euro and litas exchange rate. If it isn't necessary, until the euro adoption it isn't worth changing litas to euro, because such exchange costs money, while from 1 January 2015 cash litas will be exchanged to euro free of charge. In addition, if there isn't any need, people are recommended to not rush to exchange litas to euro during the first days of January, since it will be possible to do so for a long enough period.
