On Wednesday July 23rd , the General Affairs Council meeting will take the final decision allowing Lithuania to adopt the euro as its currency as from 1 January 2015. Lithuania will become the 19th EU member state to adopt the euro, informs ELTA/LETA.

If the General Affairs Council meeting adopts a positive decision, the Lithuanian national currency will be exchanged to euros according to the litas and euro exchange rate established by the Bank of Lithuania.

Following the General Affairs Council meeting, the European Commission will hold an event entitled Euro Festivities 2014 dedicated to Lithuania's accession to the euro area. The event will be attended by Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius, Minister of Finance Rimantas Sadzius, Chair of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania Vitas Vasiliauskas and Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius.

A week ago the European Parliament approved of Lithuania's aspiration to introduce the euro. Parliament's recommendation was passed by 545 votes to 116, with 34 abstentions. It "endorses the adoption of the euro by Lithuania on 1 January 2015."
