Estonia to allocate 700,000 kroons for refugees in Sudan

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 07.11.2008.Print version
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia will support aid to refugees and internally displaced persons of Sudan with 700,000 kroons, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

The aid will be provided through the UNHCR. The United Nations have classified Sudan the area of one of the gravest humanitarian catastrophes in the world.

The minister of foreign affairs Urmas Paet stated that the situation in Sudan and in Chad is extremely worrying.

“The civil war in Sudan has caused an extensive humanitarian crisis in the State, which has brought along many victims among the civilian population,” said Paet.

According to him the humanitarian situation there is constantly deteriorating; the neighbouring country Chad alone has received a couple of hundred thousand refugees and the number is growing every day.

Estonia has supported the improvement of the humanitarian situation in Sudan since the year 2004. The project is being financed from the budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, from the resources earmarked for development and humanitarian aid.

In the year 2008 Estonia has allocated 60 million kroons for development and humanitarian aid.
