Estonian government grants extra funds to fight against snow

According to the proposal of the prime minister, the Estonian government decided to allocate from its reserves 15 mln kroons to local municipalities to finance costs of snow-cleaning work, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht Online reports.

Due to two consecutive winters with abundance of snow, Estonian municipalities have trouble covering the costs of cleaning roads of snow. The past few days have seen record December snow levels in many places in Estonia but the first quarter of this year was just as difficult.

Then, the monthly costs of local municipalities’ road maintenance units were by nearly 13 mln kroons higher than in less snow-abundant years of 2008 and 2009. As the result, many municipalities have said that they already use funds meant for road repair, lighting etc to clean streets of snow.
