There is no financing for renovation of Freedom Monument in Riga

BC, Riga, 27.04.2017.Print version
There is no financing earmarked for renovation of the Freedom Monument in Riga, writes LETA according to the Latvijas Avize daily reported on Thursday.

The time for the regular repairs and renovation of the Freedom Monument arrived already a couple of years ago. This summer is the last moment to conduct these works in order the prepare the Freedom Monument for Latvia’s Centenary events. The works have been planned by neither the Riga City Council, nor the government have allocated the necessary financing yet.

Previously, renovation of the Freedom Monument was conducted in spring 2006, when the stars on the top of the monument were gilded. Some regular work is being done on the basis of the monument, which is at the eye level of people. Now the necessary repair works on the top of the obelisk will require about EUR 200,000.

Riga Municipal Monument Agency’s spokeswoman Marite Senberga voiced hopes that the Culture Ministry that usually distributes resources for renovation of monuments through the State Inspectorate for the Protection of Cultural Monuments (VKPAI) will earmark funding for the Freedom Monument as well.

VKPAI representative Janis Asaris rejects such a proposal, saying that the inspectorate’s budget for renovation of monuments is EUR 800,000, and if one fourth of it has to be given to the Freedom Monument, the rest of the program would collapse, as the money has been earmarked to about 100 monuments.
