Education and Science Minister of Latvia Tatjana Koke (Union of Greens and Farmers) admits a possibility that, as part of austerity measures, approximately 2,000 teachers could be laid off in 2010.

As Koke said in an interview to the Latvian State Television's broadcast "Labrit, Latvija!" ("Good morning, Latvia!") earlier today, next year the number of pupils and students is expected to shrink by approximately 12,000, therefore the number of teachers could also be curbed.

As reported, today over 4,000 teachers and education sector workers will gather for a rally and go on a protest march in Riga today to express their discontent with reduced salaries for education and science workers.

The protest march will start at 2 p.m. at the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia building and finish at the Cabinet of Ministers building.
