Lithuanians have 400,000 credit cards, 3 mln debit cards

Figures from the Lithuanian Banks' Association show that credit cards are not as widespread in Lithuania as they are in the United States, the business daily Verslo Zinios reported on Friday, cites LETA/BNS.

There were nearly 400,000 credit cards in the Lithuanian market in the third quarter of 2015 and 216 million euros had been spent using these cards, compared with over 3 million debit cards and 2.8 billion euros spent.

"In Lithuania, a credit card is often perceived not as a loan, but rather as a means to pay online, book something, get travel insurance and so on. It is not widely used as a means to deal with short-term financial difficulties," the paper quoted Odeta Bloziene, the Lithuanian head of the Swedbank Personal Finance Institute, as saying.

According to her, many Lithuanians prefer to take consumer loans if they need additional money, because amounts are larger, and some people use non-bank lenders' services.
