Number of low-income persons in Latvia lower than 3% for first time in two years

The number of low-income persons in Latvia kept falling in May 2015, reaching a figure lower than 3% for the first time over the past two years, according to the Welfare Ministry's information, writes LETA.

In May 2015, Latvia had 58,875 low-income persons, which is 1,784 persons fewer than in the previous month.


In May, the number of low-income persons fell under 3 percent, reaching 2.97 %, as compared with 3.06 % in the previous month. At the beginning of the year, the number of low-income persons in Latvia reached 3.3 % or 65,461 persons, but at the beginning of 2014 - 4.16 %.


However, according to the Central Statistical Bureau's data, Latvia's population in this period has decreased as well. In January, the population of Latvia was 1,986,100, but in May - 1,980,700. At the beginning of 2014, there were 2,001,500 people living in Latvia.
