Ministry: Estonia does not have its own gas reserves

BC, Tallinn, 05.09.2014.Print version
Estonian Economy and Communications Ministry estimates that if Russia stopped gas deliveries, Estonia would have enough natural gas only to last five days, since the gas stored for winter in the Latvian Incukalns reservoirs belongs fully the Russian gas concern Gazprom, LETA/Delfi Ärileht reports.

Economy and Communications Minister Urve Palo asked recently from Estonian system operator EG Võrguteenused and Eesti Gaas who operates at the market as a monopoly, how they have prepared to ensure security of supply of gas if Russia interrupted deliveries.

EGV and Eesti Gaas both replied that they do not consider disruption of Russian gas supply realistic, but if it happens, Estonia has a supply for the upcoming winter, since in the Latvian storage, there is 500 million cubic meters of gas for Estonia, according to contracts.

According to the Ministry, however, Estonia does not have such gas in the storage facility, which could be moved freely between Latvia and Estonia if Russia's supply disruptions happen.

Incukalns gas tank belongs to the Latvian Latvijas Gaze, of which over a third of the shares belong to Gazprom.
