Estonia and Finland submit financing application for Balticconnector studies

BC, Tallinn, 19.08.2014.Print version
AS EG Võrguteenus and Gasum OY submitted to the European Commission the application for financing of studies for the Balticconnector gas pipeline linking Estonian and Finnish gas transmission grids, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The application for funding these studies was submitted in the framework of the European energy systems interconnection aid package CEF Energy funding round.

AS EG Võrguteenus board chairman Sergei Jefimov said that the support is applied for research activities that include both land and the territorial sea in Estonia.

"The studies in Estonian land and territorial sea include construction geotechnical studies in the route corridor of the gas pipeline to be built, compiling pipeline projects for both the open sea part and land, and other studies, whose aim is to prepare for the Balticconnector construction financing application, which we plan to send to the CEF in 2017," commented Jefimov.

Balticconnector would link the Estonian and Finnish gas transmission networks, improving the supply reliability of both countries. It also opens the possibility for Gasum OY to keep gas in Latvia, in the Incukalns underground gas storage. Together with the LNG terminal to be built on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Balticconnector is able to provide an alternative source of gas supply for the entire region, and a basis for the emergence of a single gas market in the region.
