Renewable energy production formed 12.6% of the total electric energy consumption in Estonia in 2013, by 2.4 percentage points less than in 2012, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The total production of renewable energy fell by 16% to 1.15 terawatt-hours. Electricity produced of biomass, biogas and waste fell by 32% and formed 597 GWh. The amount of electricity produced of biomass fell already in the fourth quarter of 2012, when large-scale burning of biomass in Narva power plants was stopped.

The state paid 30.1 mln euros of subsidies on electricity produced of biomass, biogas and waste versus 47 mln euros the year earlier.

Wind energy production formed 46% of total production of renewable energy and it grew by 18% or 80 GWh, as several new wind energy parks were added at the end of 2012 and last year. Wind energy subsidies grew by 61% to 21.9 mln euros.

The subsidies paid for solar energy surged last year but the total volume was still marginal, 6,000 euros a year.

The state paid subsidies for nearly 1 tera-watt hour of renewable energy last year. In monetary terms, the amount fell by 15% to 53 million euros.
