Although the Lithuanian government has stressed on several occasions that a new nuclear power plant in Visaginas will be constructed in cooperation with Latvia, Estonia and Poland, the four countries have not yet signed any documents regarding such partnership, and such a document could only be signed at the end of the next year, as Gintautas Mazeika, board chairman at the LEO LT energy holding company, said at a press conference on Thursday.

"Lithuania has to do its homework on the needed capacity and the type of nuclear power plant needed. This has to be done by the end of next year," said Mazeika ELTA.

The preparatory work continues on schedule, said Mazeika.

The new nuclear power plant's environmental impact assessment released in August states that the plant's total capacity may reach 3400 megawatts.

The first unit of the new nuclear plant could be built by 2016-2018. The construction is estimated to cost LTL 28 billion (LVL 5.7 billion).
