Prime ministers of Latvia and Finland focusing on energy issues

Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way), during a meeting yesterday with Finnish Premier Matti Vanhanen, discussed bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Finland in the context of the European Union (EU) and the region, focusing on energy issues, LETA was informed by State Chancellery Communications department.

The Finnish premier expressed support for Godmanis' appeal to assist Latvia in specific issues connected to the common EU energy policy, including construction of the electricity link between Sweden and Latvia, which is necessary for the consolidation of Latvia's energy independence.

Godmanis has confirmed Latvia's intention to promote bilateral economic cooperation in the economy sectors that are state's priority. Also the situation in the banking and finance sector in Latvia was discussed.

Regarding the relations with Russia, the government leaders from both countries discussed the topics that Latvia and Finland have in common – the vehicle lines on the border with Russia, as well as discriminatory tariffs of rail transit traffic and the tariffs of round timber export. In the regional perspective, work on possible reforms of the Baltic Sea States council and new strategic priorities was discussed.

During his official visit, Godmanis also participated in an informal meeting of European premiers from liberal parties in Finland.

Among the topics at the informal meeting were the Lisbon Treaty and its implementation, and matters related to European Parliament elections.
