Grybauskaite: Lithuania must talk to EC on Ignalina NPP funds, not argue

BC, Vilnius, 20.12.2012.Print version
President Dalia Grybauskaite has criticised Lithuania's actions in closing the old Ignalina nuclear power plant (NNP) and pointed out that in order to receive bigger funds for the decommissioning from the European Commission's (EC) multinomial budget, we should talk about it rather than go into conflicts, informs LETA/ELTA.

Grybauskaite called the task of closing the NPP a challenge since nobody ever before has decommissioned a Russian reaction of such kind. On the other hand, according to the president, there was some miscommunication in the country and also the fact that the project's contractor is German company Nukem is of Russian-capital had some influence.

"Our officers also, unfortunately, did not show a certain expertise when they went into an open fight with the EC. One should talk rather than argue with the EC and similar institutions. Striking one's hand on the table will not increase the closing funds. We must assume our own responsibility for the quality of our work and try to convince partners that we will be able to complete the task in a responsible and, most important of all, transparent manner as the sums concerned are huge. We should all assume a bit of the blame in this situation," she said Wednesday on a national television's programme Teise Zinoti.
