Lithuania or Latvia: Location of electricity link with Sweden still unclear

BC, Vilnius, 11.10.2008.Print version
It is still unclear which country - Lithuania or Latvia - will have the future electricity link with Sweden. The details of this important project remained unspecific after the meeting between Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas and Latvian Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis on Friday.

However, the head of the Lithuanian Government is convinced that there has been a "successful step" made with regard to both the electricity link and Latvia"s support for the "modification of stopping" Ignalina nuclear power plant. He indicates still thinking that Lithuania has "achieved more" for this project by implementing more calculations, evaluating environmental impact, inviting Latvians and Estonians to join the erection of the cable. According to Kirkilas, Sweden should choose Lithuania"s offer, informs ELTA.

"If Sweden decides that Lithuania"s offer and feasibility study are more acceptable, Latvia will not contradict the decision, though it also has its own offers," Kirkilas explained. Meanwhile, Godmanis said that it was very important to establish a joint energy market of the Baltic states and to join the current electricity market of Scandinavian countries. In his opinion, it is necessary to invite Estonian colleagues into the bilateral negotiations between Latvia and Lithuania over the electricity link with Sweden. Then the offered variants would be discussed and submitted to Sweden, which could choose the most appropriate one. Godmanis thinks that the decision on the future link via the bottom of the Baltic Sea to Sweden will be made by the end of this year.
