Deputy Secretary General in charge of energy issues of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications of Estonia Einari Kisel stated that the realistic perspective for establishing a nuclear power plant in Estonia is by the year 2023-2025, writes EPL Online.

Einari Kisel.

Kisel stated on Thursday that energy consumption in Estonia has decreased significantly this century. “Politicians who claim that our economy uses too much energy, refer mostly to the years 2000-2001. But the fact is that our energy consumption has fallen by nearly two times since then, when calculated into U.S. dollars,” noted Kisel, explaining that while Estonia’s economy has developed and grown by nearly 70% since then, the energy consumption has only grown by 10-15%.

Kisel stated that Estonia has already reached a consensus on the political principle – Estonia has to cover its needs with locally produced energy. Secondly, fair competition on the market has to be ensured and thirdly, the energy portfolio has to be diversified.
