Berzins: Latvia should evaluate construction of another hydroelectric power plant

Latvia should evaluate possibilities of constructing another larger hydroelectric power plant on the Daugava River, President Andris Berzins said during an interview on the on-line discussion ''Dienas rits'' this morning.

''Latvia needs another hydroelectric power plant,'' the president pointed out.

Asked to specify on which river such a power plant could be constructed, Berzins said that Latvia only has one river with energy potential, writes LETA.

The president believes that every country must evaluate the energy resource potential and opportunities available to them.

Commenting the Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant project in Lithuania, Berzins criticized the Lithuanian side's ability to communicate with others involved in the project.

''Vilnius's ability to communicate about the project has not been enough,'' the president said. ''If they [Lithuania] think they will be able to solve this only politically, they will not be successful.''
