Kubilius: single EU energy policy crucial for Lithuania's independent energy aspirations

Petras Vaida, BC, Vilnius, 02.03.2012.Print version
In today's working breakfast with the Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger in Brussels, the Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has expressed his appreciation to the commissioner for showing leadership in forging a single European Union's energy policy, facilitating the implementation of major energy projects in Lithuania that are expected to lead to country's energy independence, prime minister's press service said.

Kubilius has briefed the commissioner on the recent meetings with Gazprom, pointing out a more constructive posture of Gazprom, and the European Commission's mediation in this process. The prime minister has also talked about the progress of major energy projects, including Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), and immediate plans in this regard, writes LETA/ELTA.

Oettinger has confirmed the continued support for Lithuania's energy strategy, pointing out that the ultimate goal would be to have Lithuania and the Baltic countries as part of EU internal energy market. To achieve this goal, it is important to complete the region's energy infrastructure projects in the pipeline: the VAE, the power link with Sweden, the first and second links with Poland, the synchronization with the continental system, the implementation of the EU's third energy package in gas sector, and liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipeda. Kubilius has also brought up the issue of funding of the decommissioning of the Ignalina nuclear power plant.

Later in the day, the Head of the Lithuanian Government has met with Finance Commissioner Janusz Lewandowski to discuss the EU 2014-2020 Financial Perspective, the Cohesion Fund and the funding issues of the closure of the Ignalina NPP.
