Electricity consumption in Estonia shows an upwards trend – consumption grew by 3% in August 2010 as compared to the same time a year ago, LETA/Delfi reports. Consumption by large consumers has decreased a bit while clients of the retail grid have increased consumption, Elering said.

A total of 527 GWh of electricity was consumed in Estonia in August. Estonia exported 414 GWh of electricity, 57% to Latvia, 32% to Lithuania and 11% to Finland.

Elering’s board chairman Taavi Veskimägi said that Latvia and Lithuania continue to have a deep deficit of electricity production; in Latvia 42% of the consumed electricity was imported, in Lithuania 68%.

“The whole region’s negative production balance definitely increases price pressure in Estonia, thus the question of production capacity in the region has to be seriously worked on,” he said.

The volume of electric energy produced at the efficient coproduction regime and subsidised by the state grew in August as compared to July by 80% to 9.1 GWh.

The production of wind energy generators grew by 25% to 17.6 GWh, forming 3% of Estonia’s total consumption. In eight months, they have produced 152.3 GWh of electric energy a growth of 53% in a year.
