Power grid's isolated operation test to take place in Russia's Kaliningrad in September

As the Baltic states gear up for the synchronization of their power systems with that of continental Europe, the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad plans to perform a one-day isolated operation test in the fall. It will not affect Lithuania, the latter's power transmission system operator Litgrid says.

"We view Kaliningrad's isolated operation test as mutual preparation for the Baltic states' synchronization with continental Europe's networks. Technically, this test will not affect the operator of Lithuania's power system," Daivis Virbickas, CEO of Litgrid, said in a statement.

In his words, preparations from the Kaliningrad test have been made in advance and during its times, Litgrid will operate under a prepared working plan whose main goal is "to ensure the system's reliable and coordinate operation with the neighboring countries' operators".

The test in Kaliningrad is scheduled for September 12, Litgrid says, and it should take 8 hours. Trade in electricity imported from Kaliningrad will be suspended for that time.

The first test of this kind took place in Kaliningrad in late May, 2019 and lasted for 72 hours. Before that, several short tests of 15 minutes were performed.

Kaliningrad plans to carry out isolated operation tests every year up until Lithuania and the other Baltic states will disconnected from the post-Soviet BRELL system, which is scheduled to take place by 2025.
