On the morning of June 6 of this year, the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant's second reactor was forced to shut-down, and Lithuania has since become an importer of electric energy, because it is become more expensive for Lithuanian electric power plants to produce electric energy than to import it. Due to this, the newly reconstructed 2nd cogeneration plant in Riga has become one of Lithuania's main energy providers.
It is believed that the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant will renew its operations on July 5 of this year, which means that Lithuania will have to import electric energy from abroad in the meantime.
