Lithuanian Power Plant's Unit 8 to be mothballed starting January

BC, Vilnius, 02.01.2019.Print version
Lietuvos Energijos Gamyba (Lithuanian Energy Production, or LEG) is putting Unit Eight at Lietuvos Elektrine (Lithuanian Power Plant) in Elektrenai into "preservation mode" starting in January as the company will not provide the so-called strategic reserve service this year, reported LETA/BNS.

The cost-saving move follows the mothballing of Unit Seven a year ago.

However, the two units will be used during the Baltic power systems' isolated operation test to be performed next June as part of preparations for synchronizing the grids with continental Europe.

LEG Chairwoman and CEO Egle Ciuzaite said in December that the two old units, both built almost 50 years ago, could not operate competitively in a low-price energy market.

The Elektrenai plant's newest Unit Nine this year will continue to provide the so-called tertiary reserve service and will be also used during the isolated operation test.
