The head of state believes that it is necessary to use the available electricity facilities in Lithuania and to develop various energy sources already today.
On Tuesday, Adamkus participated in a round-table discussion "How we will live after the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant: supply of electricity after the year of 2009."
The prospects of the implementation of the projects on the creation of the Baltic States electricity market and international electricity links were discussed and the project on the erection of the new nuclear power plant was considered.
Adamkus underlined the necessity to move in the implementation of strategic projects speedier – to ratify the political agreement on the electricity link between Sweden and the Baltic states by the agreements of the energy specialists of the three Baltic states and to launch work related to the inspection of the Baltic sea bottom between Sweden and Lithuania in the nearest future.
The head of state pointed out other projects too – the electricity bridge to Poland and the erection of the new nuclear power plant.
Since the second block of the Ignalina nuclear power plant will be closed after 2009, the head of state pointed out the necessity to create favorable conditions for the operation of the Baltic electricity market. This market, according to the head of state, would later be joined to the Scandinavian countries and finally to the entire EU market.
During the discussion, the head of the state also expressed the interest in the work which has already been done, for Lithuania to have enough natural gas and other fuel needed for the production of electricity already next year.
