The power utility Latvenergo President Karlis Mikelsons said at the ceremony yesterday: the reconstructed Riga 2nd cogeneration plant was opened in a ceremony yesterday; the cogeneration plant's efficiency and electricity output have increased threefold compared to before the reconstruction, writes LETA.

Mikelsons stressed the importance of the Riga 2nd cogeneration plant reconstruction, as it will make the Latvian economy stronger in the long term. "Taking into account that the new cogeneration plant will be producing electricity for a reasonable price, the reconstructed plant is in interest of Latvian enterprises as well as households," stressed Mikelsons.

Latvia is the only Baltic country that has deregulated its electricity market so far, and Latvenergo must find ways to remain competitive on the market. "The 2nd cogeneration plant and hydropower plants can create competitive product that we could sell successfully," said Mikelsons.

The reconstructed cogeneration plant will also contribute greatly to strengthening Latvia's energy independence.

Visiting the Spanish King Juan Carlos, the President Valdis Zatlers, the Minister for Economy Artis Kampars (New Era) and the other officials participated in the ceremony yesterday.
