Lithuania-Sweden NordBalt link offline for few hours for unknown reason

BC, Vilnius, 02.11.2016.Print version
The NordBalt power interconnection between Lithuania and Sweden went offline on Tuesday evening for a few hours due to an unknown reason, writes LETA/BNS.

Sweden's power transmission system operator Svenska Kraftnat said in a message to the Nord Pool power exchange that the power flow had been interrupted for unknown reasons but resumed a few hours later. Causes of the malfunction are being established.

Vilija Railaite, spokeswoman for the power transmission system operator Litgrid, told the company had no further information yet.

Planned maintenance on the line is scheduled for Nov. 7-18.

The 700-megawatt interconnection launched regular operations in mid-July after operating in a trial mode from the start of 2016. The power link has gone offline more than 10 times since the start of the year due to various failures.

The 550-million-euro, 453-kilometer undersea cable linking Lithuania to Sweden was manufactured and laid by Sweden's ABB.
