Lithuania-Poland power link back online after planned repairs
Lithuania's power transmission system operator Litgrid said in a message to the Nord Pool power exchange that systems of the power link were operating smoothly without any major faults. Conducted for the first time, the annual maintenance work was completed on Saturday before reactivating the link on Sunday. According to the message, the maintenance will be conducted once a year.
During the week of maintenance, specialists of Litgrid Power Link Service checked the performance of link equipment, cooling, operation and security systems, filters and other elements.
The LitPol Link power interconnection between Lithuania and Poland operated at less than half of its capacity in its first year of operation and it could not be used at all for two-thirds of the time. Litgrid CEO Daivis Virbickas has said that LitPol Link could be used more efficiently, but capacity restrictions imposed by the Polish operator PSE prevent Lithuania from purchasing cheap electricity.
According to the report, the average capacity at which
electricity was transmitted via the link from Poland to Lithuania in the first
half of 2016 amounted to 221 megawatts, or less than half of its total
capacity.
