Lithuania coordinates its energy strategy with Sweden

BC, Vilnius, 28.04.2016.Print version
Lithuania is discussing its energy strategy with Sweden's energy experts to ensure that the visions of the two countries, whose power grinds are linked by the NordBalt cable, do not differ from one another, Lithuanian Energy Minister Rokas Masiulis said, cites LETA/BNS.

According to the minister, who is visiting Sweden this week, Lithuania plans to follow Sweden's example and align its energy strategy to transport development.

"Scientists from the Lithuanian Energy Institute participated in our meetings. They spent a whole day with the Swedish Energy Agency, which contributes to the development of the strategy, to get a better understanding of how the situation in Sweden will develop and how we could adjust our new strategy (to that of Sweden)," he told BNS by telephone from Sweden.

In Masiulis' words, Sweden will not need to approve Lithuania's strategy, but Lithuania will take into account Sweden's remarks and information on how it plans to develop.

According the minister, Lithuania plans to follow Sweden's example and seek that its energy and transport strategies fit with one another.

"The Swedes are planning to combine their energy and transport strategies in order to coordinate both electric cars and biofuel. I believe that we must do so in Lithuania, too," he said.

Masiulis thinks that Lithuania should also coordinate its strategy with those of Poland, Latvia and Estonia.

The current strategy sets out the main energy objectives and provides guidance for their implementation until 2020, and guidelines for development until 2030 and 2050.
