Baltic states to test isolated power system performance by 2018

BC, Vilnius, 27.04.2016.Print version
The date of tests of isolated operations of the Baltic electricity system should be set in a year. CEO Lithuania's power transmission system operator Litgrid says testing operations without importing electricity from neighboring states is necessary for synchronization with continental Europe, informs LETA/BNS.

"If you can work alone, they want to accept you," Litgrid CEO Daivis Virbickas said in his presentation of the company's operations on Wednesday.

In his words, the Baltic states would like to conduct the tests as early as possible, as the blackout possibility "increases by a factor of hundreds." However, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) advised to wait and make proper preparations, Virbickas added.

He said the tests of isolated operations of the Baltic electricity system would be conducted by 2018.

The three Baltic countries aim to synchronize their grids with continental Europe and disconnect from the so-called BRELL energy ring, which also includes Russia and Belarus, by 2025.

In addition to the BRELL links, Lithuania has new power interconnections with Sweden and Poland.
