The project on the erection of the new Lithuanian nuclear power plant (AE) is opaque in many places, yet Estonians are patient and still wait for Lithuania's specific proposals, states Estonian Minister for Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts. After a meeting with Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas and Economy Minister Dainius Kreivys in Vilnius on Monday, Parts said that Estonia was willing to take part in the project of the new AE, yet the country would consider the possibility of the erection of its own power plant if the project failed.

"It is not an easy project, issues should be discussed and solved at a political and commercial level. We need to make decisions instead of holding a number of discussions and waiting. My answer is that it is time to adopt a decision as soon as possible," the guest said.

Parts stressed that Estonia was presently safe enough with regard to energy sector, since it had its own energy resource – shale and energy link with Finland, but it wanted to ensure itself a more diverse energy portfolio, including nuclear energy as well. Now it is necessary to create a common Baltic electricity market. Then it would not be so important whether Lithuania or Latvia had the landfall of the energy link with Sweden, writes ELTA.

Energy Minister Sekmokas noted that the common Baltic market was necessary for both the projects on energy links and the new AE. The said free market would essentially start functioning after the decommissioning of the Ignalina AE, main electricity producer in the region.
