Lithuania lists natural springs and sources

BC, Vilnius, 27.04.2015.Print version
The Lithuanian Geological Survey has drawn up a single list of water springs and sources, including a total of 218 springs and mineral water sources surveyed between 2012 and 2014, the Ministry of Environment reports LETA/ELTA.

"Lithuania is rich in underground water resources and since natural springs are part of the underground water cycle it is important to register them and include the largest ones into the national underground water monitoring network," said Jonas Satkunas, head of the Lithuanian Geological Survey,

The register presents summary information about the physical structure of the sources and springs, the physical and chemical characteristics of their water, their current condition, historical facts and legends. Each spring has been allocated a separate data sheet.

Hydrologists surveyed and recorded 76 springs in the Aukstaitija ethnographic region in eastern Lithuania. Most of these springs are located in the valleys of moraine highland rivers and lakes on the edges of the Aukstaiciai and Seliai regions. Fewer were found in central and northern lowlands.

In the southern Dzukija region, 81 springs were recorded, mainly on the banks of the Neris, Nemunas, Verkne and Merkys rivers flowing across the geomorphological districts of Dzukai moraine hills and Dainava lowlands. Another 53 springs were recorded in the western Lithuanian Zemaitija (Samogitia) region. These are mainly located in the Zemaitija National Park and the Dubysa Regional Park.

Meanwhile, the south-western region of Suvalkija has the smallest number of springs, only eight. Six of them are located in the south-western Lithuanian lowlands, and one each in the Suvalkai (Suduviai) and Dzukai moraine highland fringes.
