Estonia’s electricity consumption increased by 1% in 2014

Estonian domestic electricity consumption increased by 1% to 8.1 terawatt-hours in 2014; electricity consumption growth was caused by the slightly cooler autumn and winter period, Estonian main grid company Elering announced, cites LETA.

Estonian electricity production in 2014 amounted to a total of 10.9 terawatt-hours, which is 6% less than the year before. The electricity production decreased primarily due to growth in the Nordic transit flows through the Estonian electricity system, which reduced the share of Estonian producers in covering the shortfall of Estonia’s Southern neighbors.

Nevertheless, the Estonian electricity balance was strongly in export in 2014 – electricity production exceeded consumption by 34%, yielding an energy balance surplus or net exports of 2.78 terawatt-hours.

The production of renewable energy increased. Total production in 2014 was 1.36 terawatt-hours of renewable energy, which is 18% more than in 2013. The production of renewable energy rose for all types of fuel, including increased production of biomass by a fourth and wind energy by 9%.
