Latvia and Russia can expand practical cooperation

Regardless of different positions in important international policy matters, Latvia and Russia can expand practical cooperation, Latvian President Raimonds Veonis said during the accreditation ceremony of the new Russia ambassador to Latvia, Yevgeny Lukyanov.

Vejonis said that Latvia and Russia are neighbors therefore both stand to gain from greater cooperation in culture, trade, transport, the fight against illegal migration and the organized crime, the Latvian president's press service said.


The Latvian president also voiced concerns about escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine and called on Russia to implement the Minsk agreements.


Vejonis and Lukyanov agreed to intensify the work by the Latvian-Russian Intergovernmental Commission, and Latvia undertook to organize a meeting of the Commission in the first half of 2017.


The work of the Latvian-Russian state border demarcation commission was also praised during the meeting.


Lukyanov has replaced Alexander Veshnyakov as the Russian ambassador to Latvia. The new ambassador has already met with Latvian Foreign Minster Edgars Rinkevics and will soon meet with a number of other Latvian officials.
