Lithuania will appoint a special ambassador for coordination of institutional actions over the Astravyets Nuclear Power Plant under construction in Belarus close to the Lithuanian border, writes LETA/BNS.

he plans were announced after a meeting of Lithuania's foreign, environment and energy ministers.

Kestutis Vaskelevicius, spokesman for Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius, told that the diplomat should be appointed by the end of this week. His name is withheld until the decree has been signed.

The three ministers also signed letters to top officials of the European Commission (EC) and the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), drawing their attention to the sixth incident in connection to the construction of the Astravyets plant and asking to ensure control of the Astravyets project.

In the letters, Lithuania expressed confidence that the project should be suspended as a threat to safety of the whole region, if Belarus continues developing the Astravyets project some 50 km from Vilnius and fails to abide by international security standards.

Belarus has rejected the Lithuanian reproaches of unsafe construction of the power plant.
