Estonian justmin convenes committee for calculating occupation damage

BC, Tallinn, 30.12.2016.Print version
Estonian Justice Minister Urmas Reinsalu has convened a committee, the aim of which is to take the next step in calculating occupation damage, reports LETA/BNS.

It has been discussed since the end of 1980s whether and in what way compensation for Soviet occupation should be seeked. Last week Reinsalu, a member of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL), covened a committee which would draw up suggestions for next steps in calculating occupation damage.

According to chairman of the committee Toomas Hiio it is important to study which methodology other countries have used to do that.

For instance, a similar committee in Latvia announced in April that the Soviet occupation caused damage worth 185 billion euros to the country.

Last October the justice ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania signed a cooperation memorandum, the long-term goal of which is submitting a joint claim to Russia.
