Mark Pekala highly values U.S.-Latvia dialogue in all areas of cooperation

Outgoing United States Ambassador to Latvia Mark Pekala arrived at the Foreign Ministry for a farewell meeting with Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, during which the ambassador said that he highly values the U.S.-Latvia dialogue in all areas of cooperation, informs LETA.

During the meeting, Pekala praised the excellent diplomatic, political, economic, educational cooperation between the two countries, as well as the good mutual contacts. The ambassador also praised the Latvian parliament's recent decision to increase defense spending by two percent of GDP by 2020.


Meanwhile, Rinkevics thanked the ambassador for his personal contribution in promoting bilateral relations between Latvia and the United States, and praised the country's leading role in ensuring NATO's collective defense. The minister also pointed out to the recent meetings between Latvia's top officials and U.S. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.


The two sides also discussed the situation in Ukraine, sanction policies, energy matters, as well as the upcoming NATO Summit in Wales.


As reported, Pekala will leave Riga at the beginning of August to return to the United States. His successor is not yet known, the U.S. Embassy's media assistant Raimonds Andzans informed LETA.


Pekala has served as U.S. ambassador to Latvia since September of 2012.
