At its third Session, the of the Assembly of Members of the Seimas of Lithuania, the Sejm and Senate of Poland, and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine called for strengthening the external energy policy of the European Union (EU) to address the ongoing challenges.

The interparliamentary institution declared its support for a stronger and more extensive common EU energy policy and creation of integrated European gas and electricity markets in its statement on energy security of Central and Eastern Europe. The document was signed by Seimas Speaker Irena Degutiene, Polish Senate Marshal Bogdan Borusewicz and the delegation of the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn.

In the statement, the Assembly expressed the belief that the idea of setting up a European agency for purchasing natural gas deserved more attention from EU member states and institutions, writes LETA/ELTA.

The MPs of the three countries are convinced that that the European Community should aid Ukraine in implementing EU legislation related to the membership in the European Energy Community.

They also welcome the European Union's intention to provide financial assistance to modernize Ukraine's gas transit infrastructure, encourage the development and rapid implementation of the Odessa-Brody-Plock-Gdansk oil pipeline project.

The parliamentarians of Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine adopted the Vilnius Statement as a communication to the European Parliament, European Commission, and the parliaments and governments of EU Member States.

The Assembly of Members of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland, and the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukraine was established in Luck, in 2005, with the aim of supporting euro-integration processes in Ukraine and enhancing the parliamentary dimension of cooperation between Poland, Ukraine, and Lithuania.
