Latvia’s Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (New Era) on Thursday had a meeting with the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk; at the meeting, Dombrovskis informed about Latvia's move to the euro and the planned adoption of the European single currency in Latvia on January 1, 2014, as Dombrovskis' press secretary Liga Krapane told LETA.

Dombrovskis said that Latvia was hoping to meet Maastricht Criteria in 2012 already.

The European Union's decision to admit Estonia to the euro area proves that the eurozone is open to new members, he said.

Tusk told Dombrovskis that Poland was planning to join the euro area in 2015 or 2016, which is partly because of the Polish Constitution that needs to be amended for the euro to be introduced in Poland.

Latvia is a good example to other countries in terms of how the economic crisis must be tackled, said Tusk, adding that he had high opinion of Dombrovskis' actions and decisions to improve the situation in Latvia.

Dombrovskis thanked Tusk for Poland's participation in the international lending program to Latvia. He also informed Tusk about the latest round of talks between the Latvian government and the International Monetary Fund, as well as about Latvia's decision to use only part of the international loan, as there is enough money in State Treasury at the moment. Dombrovskis also praised Poland for participation in the Baltic Air Policing mission.

Tusk, on the other hand, thanked Latvia for assistance in liquidation of flood relief operations in Poland.

Both premiers also discussed other cooperation areas, especially cooperation in tourism. Dombrovskis urged more extensive cooperation with Polish tour operators, whereas Tusk said that he would like more Polish tourists to visit the Baltic region, and that he was prepared to help develop tourism between Poland and the Baltic countries.

Tusk also commented on Polish schools in Latvia, and said that Latvia had a successful ethnic minorities education system.

Also discussed at the meeting was the energy situation in both counties and the importance of Visaginas nuclear plant project.

The two premiers also agreed that the cooperation with the United States and cooperation within NATO was very important to both countries.

In conclusion of the meeting, Dombrovskis invited Tusk to visit Latvia, and Tusk accepted the invitation.
