A record number of new Covid-19 cases - 137 - were registered in Latvia in the past 24 hours, writes LETA, according to the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).

The previous record number, 109 cases, was registered on Wednesday, when Latvia for the first time registered more than a hundred new Covid-19 cases in one day.

Of the 4,551 tests performed yesterday, 3 percent were positive. Jurijs Perevoscikovs, the director of the Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department at the CDC, said earlier that 3 percent would be the critical threshold, suggesting that the disease is spreading rapidly and is not controlled.

Of the 353,788 Covid-19 tests carried out in Latvia so far, 2,507 have come back positive, and 1,322 people have recovered from the disease.

More than twenty teachers at Riga Natalijas Draudzinas High School have tested positive for Covid-19, as Indra Vilde from the Riga City Council's Education, Culture and Sports Department informed LETA.

As a result, the school has switched to remote learning.

Jurijs Perevoscikovs, the director of the Disease Risk Analysis and Prevention Department at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), said at a press conference earlier on Friday that more than twenty new Covid-19 cases had been registered in a Riga school where 42 persons were tested for Covid-19.

CDC also has information that a Covid-positive student in another Riga school continued going to school, infecting a number of other students and teachers as a result. Those infected also attended extracurricular activities, including sports practices.

"This school is an example how Covid-19 can quickly spread among schoolchildren and school employees," added Perevoscikovs.

He explained that at the moment, the goal was to do everything in CDC's power so students could continue attending school in person. This is possible, but schools and students must do their best to observe the requirements and recommendations of the CDC, he added.

Perevoscikovs also told the press conference that the epidemiological situation in Latvia was continuing to get worse.

As reported, 47 Covid-19 patients are currently being treated in hospitals. 42 patients have symptoms of moderate severity, and five in serious condition.
