Covid-19: Twenty NATO battalion troops in Lithuania test positive for coronavirus

BC, Vilnius , 25.03.2020.Print version
Twenty troops of NATO's multinational battalion stationed in Lithuania have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the military unit's spokesman confirmed to LETA/BNS on Wednesday.

"There are more confirmed cases. At this moment, there are a total of 20 cases," Captain Evert-Jan Daniels said.

The officer gave no details as to the infected troops' nationality, apart from saying that two Dutch soldiers had been already flown to the Netherlands.

In an effort to stem the spread of the virus, military training is now taking place within the battalion only, and interaction with other units has been restricted to prevent contacts.

A TV3 new program was the first to report new COVID-19 cases in the battalion stationed in Lithuania.

The German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group was deployed to Lithuania in February 2017 in response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine and its activity in the Baltic Sea region.
