Criminal probe launched to investigate failure to conduct border checks at Riga Airport

BC, Riga, 17.02.2017.Print version
The State Border Guard has launched a criminal probe to investigate a failure to check the passports of 38 air passengers who had flown into Riga International Airport from London and were directed to the airport’s Schengen terminal where they did not have to undergo border checks, LETA was told at the State Border Guard.

The criminal investigation has been started over illegal transportation of persons across the state border.

When the flight in question with 96 passengers on board arrived in Latvia yesterday, 38 of the passengers were led to the airport’s Schengen terminal where they were not required to undergo border checks.

On discovering the omission, the State Border Guard acted quickly, and by now 26 of the passengers who entered Latvia unchecked have been found already. The whereabouts of the remaining 12 people are being established in order to determine whether they arrived in Latvia legally.

Since the investigation has just begun the State Border Guard would not comment whether the airport’s staff were to blame for directing the passengers to the Schengen terminal.
